I hear it all the time, "We know our church doesn't have very good sound, but we can't afford to fix it." You can't
afford not to fix the sound in your church! Sound is taken for granted, if it is there that's good enough, it's really not
that important. This attitude my be OK for the background music at the local supermarket but not for your local church. Why
do people attend church worship services? To see the beautiful stained glass windows? To witness a miracle? To watch the choir?
No, they go to hear the Word of God and to sing and hear the praise of God. Has your church chosen to accept serious shortcommings
of the acoustics of the building and problems with the sound system that makes the spoken word difficult to understand and
music unplesant."Well, it really doesn't cost us anything." is a common answer but is it true? What happens when the congregation
has problems understanding the spoken word? The first people to have problems will be the older members who have diminished
hearing capacity. They ususlly won't change churches they will just stay home and turn up the televangelist and they hear
just fine. What about the people with good hearing? Have you ever been to a party with a lot of noise and try to have a conversation?After
a few minutes you give up, this is because of listener fatigue. When the intelligibility is poor after about 20 minutes people
quit listening. Maybe people are sleeping because they can't hear not because God's Word is boring. People who visit your
church generally won't say anything negative about it but if they can't understand what is being said they probably just won't
come back. Most people under the age of thirty in this country have grown accoustomed to high quality music where ever they
hear it. Are you trying to attract people to the family of Christ but the sound system makes everything sound like an AM radio?
They'll find another church. What does bad sound cost? Maybe much more than you think. This isn't a sales pitch just the truth.
